Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Alva Edison made a big contribution to the world for the invention of the incandescent lamp. Before inventing the incandescent lamp, Thomas Alva Edison had already invented an electric generator, sound recorder and film. Quoted from the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Thomas Alva Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio, United States.

Early years Alva Edison Edison was the youngest of seven children, the couple Samuel Ogden Edison Jr and Nancy Matthews Elliot. Edison junior only attended school for a short time, because Edison was considered a student who was often left behind and considered not talented. This is because Edison has a slight hearing loss.

Eventually his mother pulled him out of school and his mother taught him through RG Parker's School of Natural Philosophy and The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art.
At the age of 11 years, Edison studied self-taught to fulfill his curiosity.

In 1854, the Edison family had to move to Port Huron, Michigan and made his father lose his job. Edison then worked as a newspaper seller at the age of 12 on the Port Huron rail line to Detroit.

He became a telegraph operator after rescuing three-year-old Jimmie MacKenzie from being trapped by train tracks. Feeling that he had saved his son, Jimmie's father then taught Edison to be an operator. His first assignment was on the Grand Trunk line, Stratford Junction.

Important discovery

Among his important inventions was developing the first practical incandescent light bulb in 1879. Edison also pioneered the film camera and projector in the late 1880s. In 1887, he opened the first industrial research laboratory in West Orange.

This laboratory was the first in the world and employed dozens of workers to study several subjects. However, Edison's greatest contribution to modern industry came from his work in electricity. He succeeded in developing a complete electrical distribution system for light and electricity, establishing the first power plant in New York.

Not only that, he also succeeded in inventing alkaline batteries, the first electric train, and a number of other inventions that became the foundation for the modern world of electricity. He continued to work into his 80s and obtained 1,093 patents during his lifetime. Edison died at his home, in New Jersey, on October 18, 1931.
