History of Prambanan Temple

Prambanan Temple was built during the reign of the Medang Mataram Kingdom (Ancient Mataram). Based on candrasengkala, the formulation of the year on the Siwagrha inscription, this temple is estimated to have been built in 778 Saka (856 AD).

In the book Inscription Indonesia II: Selected Inscriptions from the 7th to the 9th Century AD (1956), Prambanan Temple was built as a memorial to the victory of Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala, the king of Medang Mataram against Pu Kumbhayoni.

Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala who was given the uparata throne by Jatiningrat -- suspected of being Rakai Pikatan Dyah Saladu -- felt the need to build a monument as a sign of his royal victory.

Meanwhile, Kusen in the Ancient Mataram Kings from Sanjaya to Balitung, A Reconstruction based on the Wanua Tengah III Inscription (1994) states that the word uparata is interpreted as "died". This statement is in accordance with the contents of the Wanua Tengah III inscription, which states that Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala ascended the throne on 27 May 855 AD.

Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala is believed to have led Medang Mataram from 855 to 885 AD. According to the above source, Prambanan Temple was built to commemorates the kingship of the previous king, as a dharma for Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala's father, Rakai Pikatan Dyah Saladu. The Siwargrha inscription was also inaugurated by Rakai Kayuwangi Dyah Lokapala.

The Prambanan temple complex was originally surrounded by the current of the Opak river which meanders to the east, adjacent to the temple construction. Worried about erosion that could damage the temple building, King Dyah Lokapala intended to change the direction of the river's flow.

Finally, a drain was made to divert the Opak river to the north-south axis. The original former river current was piled up as the development of a row of Perwara Temples.
